Why Former Athletes & Celebrities Should Invest In Owning Their Story

St. Louis, MO – February 13, 2023 – As I watched the celebration following the Super Bowl, I couldn’t help but think back to my time with the St. Louis Cardinals and winning the World Series in 2006 and 2011. Those are memories I’ll never forget.

Winning a championship is a legacy and brand defining moment for the players.  It is something they will enjoy benefits from many years later particularly if they are smart about investing in their own storytelling.

As I watched Patrick Mahomes and his teammates from the Kansas City Chiefs celebrate, I couldn’t help but think about how they should be smart about preserving their individual stories and memories.   This blog post is for all those former athletes and celebrities out there who were part of something equally special that they want to hold onto not just for themselves, but for their families.

As a former athlete or celebrity, you've likely spent years honing your craft and building your brand. But in a world where anyone can take and share videos of you, it can feel like you've lost control over how your story is told. That's why it's crucial to invest in professional video storytelling that you own the copyright on.

You need to be smart about preserving your story and invest in the proper “telling” of that story. When I say proper telling, I mean hiring talented storytellers who can do justice to your story on screen. I couldn’t help but think about a gifted storyteller who grew up not far from Kansas City who built an entire empire around great storytelling on screen – Walt Disney.

I’m sure you probably saw the ad that the company is celebrating 100 years. Walt Disney epitomizes what it means to be a great storyteller. You should engage someone with those skills to bring your story to the screen but make sure you own the copyright on the work (i.e. make it a work for hire).

Here are just a few of the benefits of taking control of your brand through video storytelling:

Protecting Your Image: When you own the copyright to your video content, you have the power to control how it's used and shared. This can prevent others from using your image or story in ways that could damage your brand.

Building Your Brand: With professional video storytelling, you have the opportunity to showcase your personality, values, and passions in a way that goes beyond words or images alone. This allows you to build a stronger, more authentic brand that truly represents who you are.

Engaging with Fans: Video storytelling is a powerful tool for connecting with your fans. By sharing behind-the-scenes moments, personal stories, and exclusive content, you can deepen your relationship with your fans and create a loyal following.

Creating Revenue Streams: When you own the copyright to your video content, you have the opportunity to monetize it in multiple ways. Whether you're selling access to your video library, licensing your content to media outlets, or using it to promote products or services, you can create new revenue streams that help sustain your brand.  I'm particularly excited about the work STORYSMART is doing in this space to help former athletes monetize their own stories.  I'm looking forward to sharing more with you in the near future.

Securing Your Legacy: Your athletic or celebrity achievements may fade over time, but a well-crafted video story can preserve your legacy for generations to come. By investing in professional video storytelling, you're not only building your brand, but also securing your place in history.

In today's digital world, it's more important than ever to take control of your brand and ensure that your story is told in the way you want it to be. By investing in professional video storytelling and owning the copyright, you can reap the benefits of a stronger, more authentic brand, deeper engagement with your fans, and new revenue streams.
